glengall road
Glengall Road fortuitously came into my life during the summer of 1994. I lived there off and on until our occupancy was terminated in December 1996.

The first piece on the left was taken in the summer of 1995. The house was full of people. It's shot in a way which reflects my role there, looking in from the outside, being and American who was only recently introduced to British squat culture. I wanted to capture as much of the building's essence in one session as possible. It all seemed so alive.

The second piece was made shortly after I moved back to London from New York in summer 1996. It traverses the three stories of stairs in the house, punctuated by the entryways to different rooms. This time I am inside the house, yet still looking at the rooms and their contents from a neutral position.

The rest of the pictures were taken 10 days after we were kicked out, in December 1996. They didn't officially close up the house for about a month after our eviction date, so I went back to document how it had been left, and what had happened to it since we had made our exit. I remember being surprised at how empty it felt, so void of all life, since it had only been unoccupied for about two weeks. The phone still worked, but when i picked it up the sound it made felt as if it were connected to some other world, not this one. There were so many bits and pieces of us left behind, yet still there was an overwhelming sense of abandonment. I found it haunting that a space once so bustling instantly felt so drained of life, almost defeated. I took a bunch of cassette tapes that I found, and these pictures.
